Yet Kilimanjaro is more than a summit. The journey unfolds gradually through rainforest, heath and moorland, alpine desert and finally the stark glacial world surrounding Uhuru Peak, making the changing landscape as memorable as the destination itself.

01 · RAINFOREST
Beneath the Canopy
The lower slopes are wrapped in lush montane forest, where giant trees, ferns and moss-covered trails create a rich beginning to the climb.
02 · MOORLAND
Above the Forest
As the trees disappear, open heath and moorland reveal wider skies, volcanic ridges and the first commanding views towards Kilimanjaro’s summit.
03 · ALPINE DESERT
The High Mountain
Vegetation becomes sparse as the trails enter a stark world of volcanic rock, dramatic valleys and immense mountain scenery beneath Kibo.
04 · SUMMIT
Uhuru Peak
At 5,895 metres, Africa’s highest point rises above glaciers and the crater rim, rewarding the final ascent with an unforgettable view from the Roof of Africa.

Every route reaches towards the same summit, but the landscapes, pace and character of the journey can be remarkably different.
SCENIC & BALANCED
Machame Route
A beautifully varied trail through rainforest, the Shira Plateau and Kilimanjaro’s dramatic Southern Circuit, with a strong acclimatization profile.
QUIET & REMOTE
Lemosho Route
Beginning on the mountain’s quieter western side, Lemosho offers expansive scenery, lower initial traffic and excellent opportunities for gradual acclimatization.
CLASSIC & DIRECT
Marangu Route
Kilimanjaro’s established hut route follows a more direct approach to the summit and is the only major route offering mountain hut accommodation.
QUIET & WILD
Rongai Route
Approaching Kilimanjaro from the remote northern side, Rongai offers quieter trails, drier landscapes and a more secluded journey before joining the final ascent towards the summit.
STEEP & CHALLENGING
Umbwe Route
A dramatic and demanding approach, Umbwe climbs steeply through rainforest towards Kilimanjaro’s Southern Circuit. Its rapid altitude gain makes it best suited to experienced, well-prepared trekkers.
LONG & IMMERSIVE
Northern Circuit
Kilimanjaro’s longest major route follows the quieter northern slopes, offering exceptional scenery, fewer crowds and generous time for acclimatization before approaching Uhuru Peak.
