The Classic Way Up Kilimanjaro

The Marangu Route is Kilimanjaro’s oldest and most established trail, approaching the mountain from its southeastern slopes. Often known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” it follows a relatively direct path towards the summit and is the only major Kilimanjaro route where trekkers sleep in mountain huts rather than tents.

Over five demanding days, the landscape transforms from lush montane rainforest to open heath, stark alpine desert and finally the frozen heights surrounding Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. Its shorter schedule makes Marangu attractive to travellers with limited time, although the rapid altitude gain makes good preparation and a measured pace especially important.

Day by day

A concise itinerary with enough detail to inspire, and enough flexibility to make it entirely your own.

DAY ONE · INTO THE RAINFOREST

Beneath Kilimanjaro’s Canopy

Your climb begins at Marangu Gate on Kilimanjaro’s southeastern slopes. After registration and a briefing with your mountain guide, step onto a well-defined trail winding gradually upward through lush montane rainforest. Towering evergreen trees, giant ferns and moss-covered trunks surround the path, with opportunities to encounter blue monkeys and colobus monkeys along the way. After approximately four to six hours of trekking, arrive at Mandara Hut for your first night on the mountain.

DAY TWO · ABOVE THE FOREST

Into the Open Moorlands

Leave Mandara behind as the dense rainforest gradually gives way to Kilimanjaro’s heath and moorland. Giant heathers, lobelias and groundsels appear across an increasingly open landscape, while clear conditions can reveal striking views towards both Kibo and Mawenzi. The steady climb continues across rolling terrain as the air becomes noticeably thinner, eventually reaching Horombo Hut at 3,720 metres.

Heath & Moorland Trek · 2,700m → 3,720m

Horombo Hut

DAY THREE · INTO THE HIGH MOUNTAIN

Across the Saddle

Today you leave the moorlands and enter Kilimanjaro’s stark alpine desert. The trail crosses the Saddle, the immense high-altitude plain stretching between Mawenzi and Kibo. Vegetation almost disappears as volcanic rock, gravel and open skies dominate the landscape. With oxygen levels decreasing, the pace becomes deliberately slow as you climb towards Kibo Hut. Arrive at approximately 4,700 metres, enjoy an early dinner and prepare your equipment before resting ahead of the midnight summit attempt.

EXPERIENCE

Alpine Desert Trek · 3,720m → 4,700m

STAY

Kibo Hut

DAY FOUR · THE SUMMIT

To the Roof of Africa

Around midnight, begin the most demanding chapter of your Kilimanjaro journey. Climb slowly through steep volcanic scree into the Arctic Zone, eventually reaching Gilman’s Point on the crater rim as dawn begins to break. From here, continue towards Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa.

After celebrating your achievement among Kilimanjaro’s glaciers and immense summit landscape, begin the long descent. Return to Kibo Hut for a brief rest before continuing downward to Horombo Hut for a well-earned night on the mountain.

Uhuru Peak · 4,700m → 5,895m → 3,720m

STAY

DAY FIVE · THE DESCENT

Back Beneath the Trees

One of the most important acclimatization days of the climb takes you steadily upward through the alpine desert toward Lava Tower at 4,630 metres. The landscape becomes raw and elemental, shaped by volcanic rock, sparse vegetation and sweeping high-altitude views.

After reaching the day’s highest point, you descend to Barranco Camp at approximately 3,960 metres. The considerable drop in sleeping elevation helps your body adapt while bringing you into the extraordinary Barranco landscape, known for its giant senecios and imposing mountain walls.
