A Longer Route. A Stronger Journey.
The 9-Day Lemosho Route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from its quieter western side, offering a beautifully varied journey through rainforest, open moorland, the vast Shira Plateau and the stark alpine landscapes beneath Kibo.
Its longer itinerary provides valuable time for acclimatization, including a dedicated acclimatization hike before the route continues toward Lava Tower, Barranco and the southern slopes of the mountain. The final challenge leads to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa.
Best suited to: Trekkers who prefer a longer Kilimanjaro itinerary with more gradual altitude adjustment, varied scenery and additional acclimatization time.
Day by day
A concise itinerary with enough detail to inspire, and enough flexibility to make it entirely your own.
DAY ONE · INTO THE RAINFOREST
Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
After completing the necessary park formalities at Londorossi Gate, a short transfer brings you to the beginning of the Lemosho trail. Your first steps on Kilimanjaro lead beneath the dense canopy of the montane rainforest, surrounded by giant fig trees, wildflowers, moss-covered trunks and abundant birdlife.
The relatively gentle climb provides a comfortable introduction to the mountain, allowing you to find your trekking rhythm as you gradually gain altitude and make your way toward Mti Mkubwa Camp.

DAY TWO · TOWARD THE SHIRA PLATEAU
Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
revealing giant heathers, volcanic formations and increasingly expansive views across the mountain’s western slopes.
As you approach the Shira Plateau, the distinctive form of Kibo begins to dominate the horizon. The dramatic transition in vegetation and scenery makes this one of the first days where the scale of Kilimanjaro truly reveals itself.

DAY THREE · ACROSS THE SHIRA PLATEAU
Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
Today offers a gentler progression across the remarkable Shira Plateau, one of the world’s highest volcanic plateaus. Open landscapes stretch around you, punctuated by giant groundsels, everlasting flowers and hardy vegetation adapted to Kilimanjaro’s increasingly demanding environment.
The gradual ascent is intentionally paced to support acclimatization while giving you panoramic views toward Kibo and across the valleys below.

DAY FOUR · CLIMB HIGH, SLEEP LOW
Shira 2 Camp to Moir Hut Area & Return
This day is dedicated to acclimatization. From Shira 2, you climb higher toward the Moir Hut area, entering an increasingly rugged landscape where vegetation thins and volcanic rock begins to dominate.
After reaching the higher elevation, you descend again to sleep lower at Shira 2. This classic “climb high, sleep low” approach gives your body valuable additional time to adapt before the journey continues deeper into Kilimanjaro’s high-altitude environment.

DAY FIVE · INTO THE ALPINE DESERT
Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
One of the most important acclimatization days of the climb takes you steadily upward through the alpine desert toward Lava Tower at 4,630 metres. The landscape becomes raw and elemental, shaped by volcanic rock, sparse vegetation and sweeping high-altitude views.
After reaching the day’s highest point, you descend to Barranco Camp at approximately 3,960 metres. The considerable drop in sleeping elevation helps your body adapt while bringing you into the extraordinary Barranco landscape, known for its giant senecios and imposing mountain walls.

DAY SIX · THE BARRANCO WALL
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
The morning begins beneath one of Kilimanjaro’s most recognizable features, the Barranco Wall. Its steep appearance can be intimidating from camp, but the ascent is non-technical and becomes one of the most memorable sections of the Lemosho Route.
From the top, spectacular views unfold across glaciers, valleys and surrounding peaks. The trail then crosses a succession of ridges and valleys before reaching Karanga Camp, where you settle in for another night high on the mountain.

DAY SEVEN · THE FINAL APPROACH
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
The landscape becomes increasingly stark as you cross exposed rocky slopes toward Barafu Camp, the final base before your summit attempt. Vegetation has almost completely disappeared, leaving dramatic views toward both Kibo and Mawenzi.
Once at Barafu, the focus shifts toward preparation. You’ll rest, hydrate, organize your equipment and have an early dinner before trying to sleep. Later that night, you wake for the most demanding and rewarding stage of the climb.

DAY EIGHT · THE ROOF OF AFRICA
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Shortly after midnight, the final ascent begins beneath the darkness of the Kilimanjaro sky. Step by step, you climb through freezing conditions into the Arctic Zone, where snow, ice and glaciers replace the rocky landscapes below.
The climb culminates at Uhuru Peak, 5,895 metres above sea level, the highest point in Africa. After time at the summit, you begin the long descent, gradually leaving the frozen upper mountain behind as vegetation starts to return.
The day finally concludes at Mweka Camp, where a well-earned rest awaits after the greatest challenge of the journey.

DAY NINE · BACK BENEATH THE TREES
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Your final morning on Kilimanjaro leads downward through the lush southern rainforest. Towering trees and dense vegetation return around the trail, creating a striking contrast with the barren summit landscape experienced only a day earlier.
At Mweka Gate, the mountain journey officially comes to an end. Successful climbers receive their summit certificates before departing the park and beginning the journey back to Arusha.
