The Umbwe Route is Kilimanjaro at its most dramatic: steep, quiet and uncompromising. Beginning beneath the dense rainforest on the mountain’s southern slopes, the trail climbs rapidly through changing landscapes towards the high alpine wilderness of Kibo. Over six demanding days, the route passes Barranco’s towering walls, crosses the southern slopes beneath the glaciers and joins the final ascent to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa.
Best suited to experienced and well-prepared trekkers, Umbwe rewards the challenge with fewer crowds, striking mountain scenery and an exhilarating sense of isolation.

DAY ONE · INTO THE RAINFOREST
Beneath Kilimanjaro’s Canopy
Your climb begins with a drive to Umbwe Gate, where registration is completed before stepping onto one of Kilimanjaro’s quietest trails. The route rises steeply through dense montane rainforest, beneath towering trees draped in moss and alive with birds and occasional colobus monkeys. As the forest gradually thins, arrive at Umbwe Cave Camp for your first evening on the mountain.

DAY TWO · ABOVE THE FOREST
Into the Wild Moorlands
Leaving Umbwe Cave behind, the trail continues steeply upward as the rainforest gives way to open moorland and increasingly dramatic mountain scenery. Follow the narrow ridge between the Umbwe and Lonzo valleys, with sweeping views appearing as you gain altitude. The day ends beneath the imposing southern face of Kilimanjaro at Barranco Camp, surrounded by one of the mountain’s most spectacular landscapes.

DAY THREE · ACROSS THE SOUTHERN CIRCUIT
Beyond the Barranco Wall
The morning begins beneath the magnificent Barranco Wall. Climb its winding rocky path, using your hands in places as the trail rises toward breathtaking viewpoints above the valley. From the top, continue across Kilimanjaro’s Southern Circuit through alpine terrain, descending and climbing through several valleys before reaching Karanga Camp beneath the glaciers of Kibo.
